The Astronomy of Aries Aries star chart

Aries is one of 12 constellations that lie on the ecliptic, known jointly as the Zodiac. It is located between Pisces and Taurus on the ecliptic, and is also bounded to the north and south by Cetus, Perseus and Triangulum.

It has a Right Ascension (RA) of 3 hours, and a Declination (Dec) of +20 degrees. (RA is the sky's equivalent of Longtitude, and Dec is equivalent to Latitude).

It is most visible in the Autumn, particularly during October which is when it is at it's highest in the sky.

As it is a fairly small constellation with only 2 noticable stars it is not easy to locate. The best method is to start from the lower left end of Orion's belt and follow the line up and to the right. This takes you through the head of Taurus (the Hyades) and on to the Pleiades. Aries is then just a few degrees to the right.

The main claim to fame for Aries is that it used to mark the start point of the sky, with what was known as the first point of Aries, also known as the Vernal (spring) Equinox. However, due to a phenomenon called the precession of the Equinoxes, this point is now in Pisces, however tradition dictates that Aries is still usually referred to as the first constellation in the Zodiac.

The Mythology of Aries Old star chart

Aries is the Latin for "the ram" (not to be confused with the god Ares), and while there are a number of rams in Greek mythology, it is generally thought that the ram in question is the one with the Golden Fleece that was sought by Jason (of the Argo).

The ram was originally presented to Nephele by Mercury, when her husband (Athamas) married again. The new wife (Ino) then persecuted Nephele's children and even plotted to kill them. Athamas tried asking the Oracle at Delphi for advice when the crops started failing (as a result of Ino parching the fields), but Ino managed to bribe the messengers to take a false reply, saying that Phrixus must be sacrificed to save the harvest. Phrixus was taken to the cliff top and was about to be sacrificed to Zeus when Nephele sent a winged ram with a golden fleece to save him. Phrixus was then joined by his sister Helle (who also feared for her life) and they flew east to Colchis. Unfortunately, Helle lost her grip and fell off of the ram at Hellespont, but Phrixus made it to safety, after which he decided to sacrifice the ram and present its golden fleece to king Aeetes of Colchis.

The fleece was then sought by Jason and his Argonauts, who recovered it with the help of Medea (daughter of Aeetes) and hung it in the temple of Zeus at Orchomenus.

An alternative version of this legend has the ram shed its fleece of its own accord and present it to Phrixus after carrying him to safety, while yet another variant has the ram sacrificed to Zeus who skinned it, and placed the body in the heavens for all to see. As with many myths, there are a number of variations and no way to tell now which was the original.

The Sun enters the Zodiacal Sign of Aries around March 21st, but it does not come into full power until about March 27th. People born between March 21st - 27th are also influenced to some extent by Pisces, the fiery nature of Aries may in this case be dampened with the watery aspect of Pisces. From the 27th onwards Aries is in full strength until April 20th, over the following seven days Aries gradually loses its strength on account of becoming overlapped by the incoming sign Taurus. This should be taken into account when character and fortune are being estimated. March 21st is the Spring Equinox and Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, is attributed to new beginnings. In Greek myth Aries is often associated with the Greek myth of the ram which carried Athamus. A fiery and positive sign Aries is aptly symbolized by the Ram, an animal with great courage and spirit. The young ram is brimming with energy, adventurous, ambitious, impulsive and enthusiastic, a pioneer both in thought and action. Those born under the sign of Aries are open to new ideas and challenges, they love their freedom, and are not easily distracted from their purpose, unless by their own impatience which will surface if they don't obtain immediate results.

Aries Characteristics: Arians aptitude for command and responsibility gains them an ascendancy over others, they thrive when directing a difficult task with boundless enthusiasm. Provided their interest is sustained they are most likely to rise to the head of affairs in which they are actively concerned. They make courageous and responsible leaders with a genuine concern for those they command, seldom will they use their subordinates to obtain their own objectives as leaders, nevertheless occasionally it does occur. Concerned with self, both positively and negatively, Arians are self-reliant and occasionally self centered being concerned with their own personal advancement and physical satisfaction. They are notable for their action, energy and initiative, they do not follow another's command easily since they are natural leaders and can be unwilling to obey or submit to directions for which they can see no reason, or with which they disagree. With implicit faith in their own abilities they may impose their will upon others and override differing opinions, even when proven to be incorrect they rarely admit the fact. With immense energy they tend towards restlessness and can be aggressive, occasionally argumentative, headstrong, quick tempered, easily offended and quite capable of holding grudges if they feel themselves affronted.

Professions and Occupations: Arians excel in any occupation where they can take the lead, organise, express themselves and fully utilize their abundant intellectual powers. Their nature is usually push or be pushed, with little middle ground. They thrive as soldiers, leaders of movements, directors and heads of business concerns, political leaders, surgeons, editors, scientists, inventors and innovators. If artistically gifted they have the ability to achieve fame. Arians make good athletes and climbers, doctors, explorers (of new ideas as well as uncharted territory, the latter including journeying into outer space), sailors and airmen. They lead the way since the Sun in this zodiac position gives their will freedom to express itself, it could be in a leadership role, or by allowing others to view themselves in a new way. They may accomplish this by knowingly carrying out a deliberate act in the name of some cause that moves them. Mentally Arians are intellectual and objective, but can be bigoted in rare situations and extremist in politics. They are excellent champions of lost causes and last-ditch resistance.

Psychology: By excessive frankness, lack of discretion and boldness of speech Arians can sometimes unknowingly make it difficult for others to relate to them, particularly as their unwarranted optimism and temerity may bring misfortune upon others and well as themselves. This can at times be objectionable to others, but they must have the freedom to act, rather then just thinking about it, getting pent-up in the process. At all costs they need to avoid negative emotions such as resentment, regret and self-pity, these emotions deny Arians of what is essential to their nature: straightforwardness. Arians should not be afraid to be forceful as this is at the very core of their nature. Fear in an Arians heart stems from a history of negative events in their personal history, such as violence or abuse from others. Being fearful may also indicate a household in childhood that negated independence and personal initiative, this may have inhibited the natural urge to go forward into life as a leader and champion. Such bad influences may, conversely have also led to being overly forceful, or unsympathetic to their own needs and sensitivity. They are quick-witted but sometimes foolhardy and over optimistic, lacking thoroughness and the ability to evaluate the difficulties of challenges into which they often rush impulsively. Arians like a challenge that will stir them to action but if the direction is not clear, then listening to their inner voice will provide an answer. An Arian without a direction in which to go, or a without a cause to fight for, would be against their nature. The great need of Aries natives is to exercise diligent self-control and discipline the qualities and tendencies of their character to the advantage of the society in which they move. It is preferable for Arians to be aware of their pioneering and not disregard it, in acknowledging it they enjoy life to the full.

Relationships: Arians are candid and direct, and make enthusiastic and generous friends. There is, however, a negative side to their associations with other people. Arians are not easy to get on with in married life particularly if their partner refuses to give way in everything, and as parents they are stern disciplinarians. They seem quite at a loss to understand the psychology of the opposite sex and their lack of tact often inflicts pain. They can easily be annoyed by slowness or moderation in their companions and, though themselves sensitive, ride roughshod over the sensitivities of others. Arian's often suffer through their affections and feelings, yet their intense pride impels them to appear unmoved. They are assiduous in providing for the comfort of their spouse and children and woman belonging to Aries often gain a distinct advantage, socially and financially upon their marriage. Arian's are highly devoted to their children, even to the point of laying down their own lives, so that they might live. You will not find a more defensive and loving parent in all the zodiac. A high sex drive makes Arian's passionate but fastidious lovers. The intensity of their sexual urges can drive them to promiscuity and can also trick them into early unwise marriage which may end in a disastrous conclusion. They like extremes, physical, emotional and mental, and benefit profoundly by experiencing them; but if extremism goes too far beyond social acceptability, then they can expect to be extremely lonely. The most harmonious and well suited marriages are formed with those born between July - 21 and August - 21 or November - 21 and December - 21.

Possible Health Concerns. Aries governs the head, brain and face, and Arian's are liable to suffer from ailments and accidents affecting this area, they are prone to headaches, particularly migraines, sunstroke, neuralgia and depression, disorders of the eyes, nose and skin of the face. The stomach and kidneys may also be affected at times, indigestion and nervous disorders are also threats. Aries rashness, impetuosity and wholesale physical commitment make them prone to accidents and physical injuries.

Potential problems and suggested solutions: All Sun signs have unique traits to their personalities, when these traits are suppressed, or unrealized, problems will arise. By examining the problem we can assess the proper solution according to the Sun signs unique characteristics. Arian's who find themselves on the receiving end of negatives will find greater peace when they express the positive. Some suggestion are listed below:

  • Become the "innovator" then, work on inspiring others. Rather than talking learn to listen.
  • Your actions reflect what is in your heart. Soul search and resolve some personal issues you may have buried.
  • Learn the art of looking before you leap. Which means first finding out what it is you wish to achieve first, then act.

The Star-stone for Aries is the Diamond, as it vibrates the strongest to your planet or sign. Diamonds are considered the greatest of stones, revered throughout the ages for their great beauty and strength, and also for their powerful spiritual and physical influences. Physically diamonds strengthen the kidneys and reproductive organs and give protection in severe disease. The ancient Romans believed that the diamond, when worn on the left arm, next to the skin, would give the wearer bravery and daring.

Famous Arians include Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Sir John Geilgud, Spike Milligan, Marlon Brando, Vincent Van Gogh and Casanova.
