The Astronomy of cancer cancer star chart

Cancer is one of 12 constellations that lie on the ecliptic, known jointly as the Zodiac. It is located between Gemini and Leo on the ecliptic, and is also bounded to the north and south by Lynx, Canis Major and Hydra.

It has a Right Ascension (RA) of 9 hours, and a Declination (Dec) of +20 degrees. (RA is the sky's equivalent of Longtitude, and Dec is equivalent to Latitude).

It is most visible in Winter, particularly during late January/early February which is when it is at it's highest in the sky.

It can be found on the line between Orion and Leo. Go from the top left of Orion (the star Betelgeuse) to the reversed question mark that makes Leo's head, and Cancer is just before Leo, and slightly above the line. Unfortunately, none of the stars in Cancer are particularly bright, making it easy to miss.

Practically in the centre of thge constellation is the Praesepe cluster (M44 alco known as the Beehive). This is easily visible with binoculars, and in dark locations is barely visible to the naked eye.

The 'Tropic of Cancer' is the latitude at which the sun appears directly overhead at noon on the summer solstice. At the time the zodiac was being finalised, this occured while the sun was in Cancer, hence it's name. Due to the precession of the equinoxes, the sun is actually in Taurus at this time.

The Mythology of cancer Old star chart

This is one of the zodiac signs with the least mythology attributed to it. The only legend around says that the crab was the one sent by Juno to kill Hercules while he fought the Hydra, and which was rather unceremoniously squashed beneath his foot. Juno placed the crab in the heavens as reward for faithful (if ineffectual) service.

One other legend associated with the constellation actually has nothing to do with a crab. Two of the stars are named 'the asses' (Asellus Borealis is the Northern Ass, while Asellus Australis is the Southern Ass). Eratosthenes wrote that during the battle between the Gods and the Giants, 2 of the Gods arrived at the battle on donkeys. Apparently, the Giants had never heard the braying of donkeys before, and fled from the sound fearing it was emanating from a monster. As a reward, the donleys were placed in the sky on either side of the 'Manger', this being an alternative name for the Beehive cluster (as 'Praesepe' can mean 'hive' or 'manger').

The Sun enters the Zodiacal Sign of Cancer around the June 21st, but it does not come into full power until about June 27th. People born between June 21st - 27th are also influenced to some extent by Gemini, from the 27th onwards Cancer is in full strength until July 20th. Over the following seven days Cancer gradually loses its strength on account of becoming overlapped by the incoming sign Leo. This should be taken into account when character and fortune are being estimated. The symbol of Cancer is the crab, the habits of this sea dwelling creature typify the timid, hesitant and yet tenacious disposition of Cancerian subjects. In mythology Cancer is often associated with the Greek myth of the Lernaean Hydra. The watery sign of Cancer is ruled by the negative, watery Moon and this negative quality is the chief characteristic of those born under Cancer and can be observed in every habit and action.

Cancerian Characteristics: The Cancerian character is the least obvious sign of the zodiac, ranging from the timid, dull, shy and withdrawn to the most brilliant. They are gifted with the most retentive memories, have a great respect for convention and a deep interest in anything that is old, sacred or historical. Their fundamentally conservative and home-loving nature values a secure base to retire when in need of respite from life's stresses, and in which the Cancerian woman can exercise her strong maternal instincts and to have a large family. They seem to prefer a dark, mysterious but comfortable home that may resemble a den, it is a place which belongs to the family rather than a showcase to impress visitors. Cancerians are sociable, but for them there is a time to socialize, an aspect of the apparent contradiction in their nature. In uncongenial surroundings or when tired with opposition and lack of success they tend to become morbid and introspective. Few are as sensitive as Cancerians, the least criticism or lack of understanding is taken deeply to heart, they respond to appreciation and encouragement. They seldom open their hearts to others and often guard their worries and grief's closely. They do not tolerate interference in their affairs and prefer to shoulder all the labour and responsibility rather than allow any meddling on the part of others. Cancerians are very complex people, sometimes appearing extremely strong and at other times to be as vulnerable as a child. They are often dominated by fear of the future and old age, this may lead them to hoard money or become selfish. They tend to accumulate things and can be unwilling to throw anything out, even relationships that have dwindled. They have unusual ups and downs in their early life and so they are compelled to work to keep ahead, but once they get on their feet they keep there, they rarely want for money and usually their wealth is the result of persistent hard work, shrewdness and foresight although their business affairs may pass through difficult phases. Outwardly they can appear formidable, unemotional, uncompromising, obstinately tenacious, purposeful, energetic, shrewd, intuitive and wise, sometimes with a philosophical profundity of thought verging on inspiration. Their intimates, however see one with a sympathetic and kindly nature, expressing sensitivity to other people, especially those they love. They are able to identify with the situations of others. They appreciate art, literature and drama, where the spectacle and ebb and flow of action and feeling particularly excite them. They may themselves possess considerable literary, artistic or oratorical talent. The Cancerian has many potential faults and can be over-imaginative and prone to fantasy, sometimes trying to shape their lives to fit some romantic ideal. They can be untidy, sulky, devious, moody, inclined to self-pity because of an inferiority complex, brood on insults (very often imagined), yet are easily flattered. They can be shy, timid and retiring, tactless and difficult yet since they are also ambitious, they will gain favour by siding with the majority opinion, outlooks and fashions of the day. Therefore they often change their opinions and loyalties and, indeed, their occupations, and may lack stability. Cancerians are easily corrupted and, because they are convincing romanticists, can make successful confidence tricksters.

Professions and Occupations: Cancerians are generally successful in occupations of a public nature. With their interest in what people are thinking and ability to judge what they can safely be told, they can be good journalists, writers or politicians, though in the latter they may remain in the background rather than attain prominent positions of power. They can serve in other departments of public affairs, particularly those which involve looking after others and do well in public service occupations from welfare and nursing to catering. Their penchant for comfort and good living makes the Cancerian an excellent chef or housekeeper. Their tenacity and powers of endurance are amazing and make excellent organisers, they have a good sense of value and economy which they may combine with a flair for inventiveness and originality. With their deep interest in anything old, sacred or historical they enjoy rummaging about in places where exciting discoveries may be made such as antique markets or antiquarian book shops, and if they can do this professionally as a secondhand dealer or specialist in antiques, they will be happy. More common occupations which suit some subjects of Cancer are estate agent, gardener and as they are happy on the sea make a good sailor. Their intuitions are reliable and should be trusted. If they can reconcile the personal conflict of their urge to be outgoing with the reserve that causes them to withdraw into themselves, then at best they can inspire a generation, especially the youthful part of it, by their idealism. A job in which they can express this, and in which they can do well, would be as a leader in a youth organization. Cancerians often reach very high exalted positions.

Psychology: With Cancerians romantic nature they may be ardent supporters of causes, for example a cricket team with whose heroes they can identify in a world of fantasy although their tendency to be emotional may make them overact. They are very timid and are afraid of refusal above all else. However, they are ambitious and their way to success is similar to their symbol, the crab. They advance slow towards their aim, and then at the most unexpected moment they grasp their prize and do not let go. Cancerians are the ones to whom others turn with problems, worries and life choice concerns. Despite their ability to support and nurture their friends, it is rather difficult for them to make friends. This may be because they take friendship seriously and don't bother to indulge superficial associations. Their deep sensitivity presents them with valuable and illuminating intuitions, especially regarding those they care for. Interestingly, they often have a yearning after the mysterious, they give the impression of being quite grounded and (surprisingly for some) have a fascination with the occult and are more open to psychic influence than the average. When correctly observed and channeled in the right direction, their enormous sensitivity can become a great source of strength. Once they have mastered their touchiness and turbulent emotions, their intellect and imagination enable them to become a success in almost anything they undertake. The main problem for Cancerians to be wary of is to remember not to let the powerful, turbulent emotions of the moment crowd out their normally rational judgment.

Relationships: Cancerians are extremely affectionate, at heart they are romantic and of a very loving disposition, although they seldom wear their hearts upon their sleeve. They can be easily influenced by those they love and admire, and swayed by the emotion of the moment. They are intensely devoted to their family and never happier than when in the heart of their family. Under the Moon's influence, Cancerians are not very aggressive in love, their lack of demonstrativeness is frequently taken for lack of sentiment, their love is not so sentimental as tenaciously loyal. Men tend to create an attractive facade of naivety that may compel woman to take the first step. They are mentally a mixture of toughness and softness in personal relationships, often emotional and romantic to the point of sentimentality in their fantasies. Male Cancerians in particular tend to be open to sensual stimulation and they may have affairs as a result, nevertheless their first loyalty remains to spouse and family, of whom they regard themselves as the protector. Cancerians love unreservedly, giving much and asking little in return, one of the most important lessons they have to learn is how to receive gracefully. Their possess a retentive memory, particularly for emotionally laden events and an ability to recall them in detail for years afterwards. Childhood memories retain great power and as they live intensely in the past in memory and in the future in imagination, a chance meeting with someone for whom they had an unrequited love, will easily rouse the emotion all over again.Cancerians are loyal friends, in a negative sense this can display as clannishness, which may seem like suspicion and coldness toward outsiders. When not correctly perceived by those held dear they become miserable, dejected and give up or get depressed and retire within. Cancerians are better not to marry when young as their nature seems to change at different stages of life. At home they usually encounter a great deal of trouble with little in the way of true happiness, no matter how successful they may appear outwardly. Such people have deep love for what they call their own people for family customs and for tradition. Their most harmonious and well suited marriages are formed with those born between February 21st - March 21st and October 21st - November 21st.

Possible Health Concerns. Cancer governs the chest, breasts, elbows and higher digestive organs, and female reproductive organs. Cancer, which can affect any part of the body, is sometimes said to have taken its name from this sign, which can therefore afflict its subjects with imperfections anywhere. Cancerians are said to be liable to breast cancer are liable to chest injuries and to suffer from bronchitis, pneumonia, pleurisy, dropsy, piles and varicose veins. Inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatism, are also likely to attack them, and trouble with the legs and feet. Excitability can lead to weak digestion, gastritis and other stomach ills, it is advised that they always try to be prudent and exercise restraint in what they eat for they may be inclined to over indulge and should be extremely careful in regard to shellfish. Alcohol consumption should be carefully guarded as Cancerians are susceptible to develop into drunkards. There is a tendency to coughs and weakness of vision. Worry is their greatest enemy and they are advised to do all that is possible to resist this potent foe. Physical fitness or sports activities and team sports can become important ways for Cancerians to work out emotional stress.

Potential problems and suggested solutions: Subjects of Cancer who find themselves on the receiving end of negatives will find greater peace when they express the positive. All water signs have unique traits to their personalities, when these traits are suppressed, or unrealized, problems will arise. By examining the problem we can assess the proper solution according to the water signs unique characteristics. Cancerians who find themselves on the receiving end of negatives will find greater peace when they express the positive. Try not to cling to someone for moral support, if necessary you should seek professional help in order to overcome this negative, needy aspect of your personality. Try to consciously rejoice over your friends good fortune rather than being self absorbed in your own negativity, when you do this you find that it will eventually become a habit and you as well as they will be happier for the change. To advance your career try to find out how the ones who have been on the job for any length of time get along with the boss and coworkers. If you follow this lead or simply decide that you will keep quiet and follow orders you will soon realise how others will warm to you. Perhaps you have a problem with putting things off until the last minute which upsets your family and friends. Procrastination has a tendency to make an unpleasant matter even worse. You would be well to take care of the business at hand and to make this your prime objective, when you do not have so many worries in the back of your mind you will be more pleasant and find it more pleasant to be around people, and you may find that life goes smoothly for you from then on.

Your Star stone is the Pearl as it vibrates the strongest with your planet or sign. With all the silvery colors of the moon, the pearl takes on its shimmering, silvery colours from the linings of the mollusc (oyster) in which it develops.
