The Astronomy of Gemini Gemini star chart

Gemini is one of 12 constellations that lie on the ecliptic, known jointly as the Zodiac. It is located between Taurus and Cancer on the ecliptic, and is also bounded to the north and south by Auriga, Canis Major and Orion.

It has a Right Ascension (RA) of 7 hours, and a Declination (Dec) of +25 degrees. (RA is the sky's equivalent of Longtitude, and Dec is equivalent to Latitude).

It is most visible in Winter, particularly during late December/early January which is when it is at it's highest in the sky.

It can be found from the Big Dipper (aka the Plough) - from the 2 stars on the right hand side, follow the line down to the constellation of Orion, and Gemini is about two thirds of the way along that line. The twin stars of Castor and Pollux are the brightest in the constellation, and although often referred to as the Twins, they are in reallity more than 10 light years apart.

Many stars are actually double stars (2 stars that orbit each other), with some being triples. Castor itself is actually 6 stars, though only 1 is visible to the naked eye. A small telescope will show 2 stars.

At the right end of the constellation is M35, an open cluster that can be seen using binoculars, with a smaller cluster called NGC2158 just to the side of it.

Every October there is a meteor shower that comes from the direction of Gemini, with the peak around the 19th.

Gemini even appears in Tolkein's Middle Earth. The constellation of Telumendil (meaning Skyfriend) is siad to be just above Orion.

The Mythology of Gemini Old star chart

Gemini is the Latin translation of the Greek for twins. Castor and Pollux were twin brothers with the unusual distinction of having different fathers. Their mother (Leda) was a mortal woman who slept with both King Tyndarus of Sparta and Zeus in the same day (this time round Zeus had taken the form of a swan). This resulted in 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls. While Castor was the son of King Tyndarus (a mortal man) and therefore was himself mortal, Pollux was the son of Zeus and was immortal. Similarly, their 2 sisters had different fathers, with Helen being daughter of Zeus and Clytemnestra daughter of Tyndarus. The 2 brothers were devoted to each other, to the extent that they were never separated even when taking part in many adventures such as Jason's search for the golden fleece, and in the Trojan war where they attempted to bring home their sister Helen (of Troy).

Finally they were in a battle which left Castor mortally wounded, and Pollux asked his father (Zeus) for permission to die so that they may remain united even in death. Zeus instead gave them both immortality, by placing them in the sky.

Another version of events has it that instead of Pollux asking to be allowed to die, he begged Zeus to allow him to share his immortality with Castor.

Due to the brothers strength and sailing ability, one school of thought is that the phrase "by jiminy" is a corruption of an old sailor's oath "by Gemini", revering the twins as protectors of ships.

The Sun enters the sign of Gemini around May 21st each year, for the first seven days Taurus continues to exert its influence so all born before the 27th fall under the rule of both Taurus and Gemini. Ruled by the planet Mercury, the sign of the Twins, is dual-natured, elusive, complex and contradictory. Gemini was symbolized by twin children, the Castor and Pollux legendary twins born of immortal Zeus and the mortal Leda, wife of the king of Sparta of Roman mythology. The astrological symbol of Gemini consists of two columns united at the top and bottom, an illustration of the duality between mind and character. As an Air sign Gemini subjects tend towards subtle versatile and intellectual qualities as well as being restless diffuse and undependable. On the one hand it produces the virtue of versatility, and on the other the vices of two-faced ness and flightiness. The intellectual and moral make-up of Gemini subjects lacks a unity that is observable in every action, this frequently leads them into difficult and perplexing situations. Linked with the restless planet Mercury, the planet of childhood and youth, Gemini subjects tend to be mercurial in everything and seem to be governed by alternately by the attraction for two extremely different poles. Gemini subjects have the graces and faults of the young, at their best they are very attractive however when at their worst they are more the worse for being the charmers they are.

Gemini Characteristics: Like children they are lively, happy and full of ardor, energy and enthusiasm with a wit that 'sparkles' if circumstances are right for them, however, without any apparent cause a sudden change may occur and they may appear cold and unresponsive. They tend towards being egocentric, imaginative and restless and Gemini subjects are usually intelligent to a remarkable degree with and intellect that can get to the root of any matter and iron out any prevailing difficulty. They take up new activities enthusiastically but may lack application and constantly require new interests, flitting from project to project in a haphazard manner. Life seems to be a game which must always be full of new moves and continuous entertainment, free of labor and routine otherwise the interest soon subsides as their attention wanders off towards fresh, new ground. Jumping ships mid-stream is another quirk in the Gemini personality, decision making therefore and sticking to a decision is particularly hard for them. Conscientiousness is not a Gemini quality, they fight a losing battle in any attempts they may make to be moral. They are extremely gifted at acquiring knowledge and it often covers a wide range of subjects, however their need of constant stimulation may mean that it seldom develops beyond the superficial. Gemini subjects have attractive qualities that usually come easily to them, they are remarkably good company, generous, affectionate, courteous, kind, witty and at times sympathetic and considerate and thoughtful towards the poor and suffering, which may only be a passing caprice and suit their mood of the moment as it can't interfere with their own lives and comforts. They can also be quarrelsome, boastful and cheats. By utilizing their outward attractiveness to gain their own ends they will use any weapon in their armory, lying, and cunning evasiveness, contriving to place the blame on other people with every charm they can turn on. They also strive to be honest and straightforward, but self-interest usually the victor and will throw tantrums and sulk like children when they don't get their own way. However, since they readily divine the intentions and character of their opponents they can often use their opponents weapons against them, consequently there are few arguments or battles of wit that Gemini subjects fail to be triumphant in. They demand attention, admiration and money but more than anything they crave change of scene and activity and are driven by an insatiable thirst for novelty. They like to travel and do so happily and successfully with their ability to adapt to any circumstance and environment. They may also move home on numerous occasions.

Professions and Occupations: Subjects of Gemini thrive best in work that calls upon mental ability beyond the norm, tact, subtlety, good judgment and quickness of wit. They have great ability with the written word and often display literary ability of a high order. They make excellent writers, teachers, secretaries, journalists as well as good clerks, solicitors, barristers, magistrates, diplomats and they can be good financiers, stockbrokers and surveyors. Occupations involving a constant change of scene and interest, where traveling is involved is an excellent occupation. Working as a traveling salesperson, brokerage work, or dealing with the public in any capacity is very suited. As skilled manipulators of language, in speech and writing they may become debaters, diplomats, orators, ministers, teachers or poets. Being logical, dispassionate, rational and analytical they make good scientists, especially in the fields of medicine and astronomy. If members of the Armed Forces, they can earn themselves a reputation for devotion to duty and heroic acts as they view danger no more seriously than anything else. They may excel in the arts, music, painting and sculpture and make good psychic researchers, of a skeptical kind since they can look dispassionately at both sides of a question, on the negative side they do find it hard to make decisions. Negatively they can degenerate into confidence tricksters, thieves and even adepts in the black arts. Geminians can be successful in many walks of life though their general characteristics tend to make them unreliable.

Psychology: Their intentions are generally disinterested and honest, but their lack of dependability often lets them down, nevertheless they can be ingenious, inventive and brilliantly clever and given a fixed purpose they can reach vast intellectual heights. Subjects of Gemini are very sensitive to changes in their environment and can become pessimistic, sullen, peevish and materialistically self-centered if circumstances force them to struggle, in very adverse situations their strength of will may desert them altogether. Self uncertainty and nervousness, feeling withdrawn and excitable worriers, feeling of discontent, irritability, reflect in their struggles. Nevertheless they are extremely adaptable and capable of adjusting themselves with their inherent ingenuity and cleverness, or consult another's opinion in order to gain control of their environment.

Relationships: Subjects of Gemini make witty, entertaining companions and good acquaintances rather than friends. Lasting friendship is not easily achieved given the uncertainty of Gemini subjects temperament, it can be the cause of many quarrels in relationships. They can be fickle although not intentionally, the basic inconsistency of their emotional nature has an amoral aspect to it so they are given to fickleness in their affections and may lead a double life, or commit bigamy. Geminians can become deeply, emotionally involved but they also display hostility to sentimentality and stand back from romantic situations, they seem disinterested in passion and may laugh at it and the protagonists in it, including themselves while analyzing it intellectually, they take nothing seriously. The intensity of involvement lasts only while it is new, they are superficial, light-hearted, cool, flirtatious and unimaginative in the understanding of the pain they may cause. Maintaining their fidelity may prove hard, retaining it requires constantly meeting their needs in a fresh and unexpected manner. The intrigue and excitement of the chase thrills them, but once the chase is over they lose interest and look around for the next.

Possible Health Concerns. Gemini rules the shoulders, arms, hands, lungs and nervous system, they may suffer with diseases and accidents associated with the upper part of the body, as well as nervous and pulmonary disorders such as catarrh and bronchitis. Their mercurial nature may also bring about nervous exhaustion, mental strain and irritability which may occur if they put under strain, it is better to avoid worry where possible. Taking unnecessary risks may result in harm to themselves or others in the process.

Potential problems and suggested solutions: Subjects of Gemini who find themselves on the receiving end of negatives will find greater peace when they express the positive. All sun signs have unique traits to their personalities, when these traits are suppressed, or unrealized, problems will arise. By examining the problem we can assess the proper solution according to the sun signs unique characteristics. Geminians who find themselves on the receiving end of negatives will find greater peace when they express the positive. If you make a commitment to something or someone you should mentally force yourself to keep that commitment where possible. This will be hard but it can, and has been, accomplished by many under this sign. Try to avoid arguing to relieve your boredom, it is something that you should not let happen as it could easily get out of control and cost you the love and companionship that you desire. When you feel like doing this it would be better to take a long walk and let the feelings pass. You have a great many creative talents and if you put these to work for you in some sort of hobby or project you will find you do not have time to be bored, also, other physical activities should be considered. Try and keep party's for weekends only and try not to overdo it. By keeping everything within your limits you may not have to fight off diseases such as obesity or cirrhosis of the liver. Cultivate the habit of not flirting with every attractive person you see and make up your mind to be a true and loving spouse, or don't commit until you are really ready to do this.

The Moss Agate is your Star-stone. It has been shown to be beneficial to the health of Geminis who are suffering from circulatory problems and helps to get your intuitive feelings tuned to a higher pitch and may relieve depression. There is another gemstone which is used for Gemini and that is the emerald, but the moss agate vibrates to the levels of your ruling planet, Mercury, and therefore is much more beneficial for you.
