Zodiac - Libra
The Astronomy of Libra
Libra is one of 12 constellations that lie on the ecliptic, known jointly as the Zodiac. It is located between Virgo and Scorpio on the ecliptic, and is also bounded to the north and south by Hydra, Lupus and Ophiuchus.
It has a Right Ascension (RA) of 15 hours, and a Declination (Dec) of -15 degrees. (RA is the sky's equivalent of Longtitude, and Dec is equivalent to Latitude).
It is most visible in Spring, particularly during May which is when it is at it's highest in the sky.
The easiest way to find it is to start with the Big Dipper, and follow the curve of the handleacross almost half the sky.
Libra is the only zodiac sign that is not related to a living creature, and originally it was considered to be part of Scorpio (it made up the claws). However, it was later seperated out into an independant constellation of it's own during the Roman era.
Visually, the only thing of interest is the star delta librae, which is to the top right od the constellation as you look at it), which is an eclipsing variable. Over the space of 2.3 days it will go from being a medium bright star to being barely visible to the naked eye. An eclipsing variable is a binary star which has one member brighter than the other, and which orbit each other in such a way that we see the dimmer star pass in front of the brighter one, causing it to appear to fade
The Mythology of Libra
It is thought that the origin of this as a constellation in it's own right was done at the time of Julius Ceaser, though it has not been possible to date it exactly. It is known that after it's creation it was considered to be a favourite of the Romans, as the founding of Rome had occured when the Moon was in the sign. The Romans were also proud of their ideas relating to justice, and as such the scales of justice were a potent sysmbol. It also occured at the time of the autumn equinox, a moment when light and dark are in balance.
There is, however, some evidence that the idea of the scales was actually a Sumerian creation from almost 2000 years earlier, and that the Romans had simply revived the older legends in a way to suit themselves. To the Sumerians, this part of the sky had been known as the Balance Of Heaven.
These days, the scales are often linked with the constellation of Virgo, in her role as Goddess of Justice, holding aloft her scales.

However, once they have reached a conclusion, its truth seems to them self-evident; and among their faults is an impatience of criticism, seldom do they allow their own feelings to interfere with that which they consider to be just. . . Nevertheless Libra indecision is legendary, avoiding having to make any decision or any confrontation, even something very simple may perplex the Libra to no end they must think of all the consequences of any decision.
