The Astronomy of Virgo Virgo star chart

Virgo is one of 12 constellations that lie on the ecliptic, known jointly as the Zodiac. It is located between Leo and Libra on the ecliptic, and is also bounded to the north and south by Coma Berenices, Crater, Hydra, Bootes, Hydra and Serpens.

It has a Right Ascension (RA) of 13 hours, and a Declination (Dec) of -5 degrees. (RA is the sky's equivalent of Longtitude, and Dec is equivalent to Latitude).

It is most visible in the Spring, particularly during April which is when it is at it's highest in the sky, but despite being the second largest constellation in the sky (and the largest in the zodiac), with the exception of Spica it is made up of somewhat dim stars, so can be hard to identify.

It can be found from the Big Dipper (aka the Plough) - follow the curve of the handle to the bright star Arcturus (orange in colour). Then carry on the same line for about the same distance again, to reach Spica.

At the time of the Autumn Equinox the Sun is in Virgo, though you cannot actually see it as the constellation is then in the sky during the daylight hours.

Virgo is the only female figure in the zodiac.

Within the constellation is a cluster of galaxies known as the Virgo Cluster. This contains aproximately 300 galaxies and is centered around 40 million light years away. With a light year being 6,000,000,000,000 miles (or 10,000,000,000,000 kilometers), that makes them about 240,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles from Earth (240 quintillion miles). Seperate from this cluster, and a mere 25 million light years away is the Sombrero Galaxy.

The Mythology of Virgo Old star chart

The maiden depicted in the constellation of Virgo is often associated with Dike, the daughter of Zeus and Themis, and goddess of justice. She was first on Earth during the Golden Age of Cronus, when food grew without cultivation, and men never aged. Then Zeus overthrew Cronus, and ushered in the Silver Age when men became more aggressive and abandoned the ways of the gods. After trying to warn humanity of the sorrows to come if they didn't change their ways, Dike decided to abandon Earth altogether and took to the skies.

Sometimes she has been known as Astraeia, daughter of Astraeus and Eos. She was the Roman goddess of justice, who finally sickened of the wars of men and left for the heavens (the last of the gods and goddesses to do so).

She has also been connected to Demeter, the goddess of agriculture whose daughter was kidnapped by Aides. Demeter spent so much time searching for Persephone that she neglected the crops leaving her people to go hungry. Aides finally returned Persephone, but only after striking a bargain with Demeter in which she would only tend to the crops for a few months of each year, so ensuring that crops don't grow during the winter months.

Whichever figure she is, she is normally depicted as having wings (like an angel) and holding an ear of wheat.

The Sun enters the Zodiacal Sign of Virgo around August 21st, but it does not come into full power until about August 27th. People born between August 21st - 27th are also influenced to some extent by Leo, from the 27th onwards Virgo is in full strength until September 20th. The following seven days it gradually loses its strength on account of becoming overlapped by the incoming sign Libra. This should be taken into account when character and fortune are being estimated. Virgo is the only zodiacal sign represented by a female and sometimes thought of as a potentially creative and delicate girl, or sometimes as an older woman, intelligent but rather pedantic and spinsterish. The latter impression is occasionally verified with the Virgoan assiduousness, fastidious love of cleanliness, hygiene and good order, conventionality and aristocratic attitude of reserve. Virgo is also identified with Persephone, daughter of Demeter (goddess of agriculture and guardian of marriage). This negative and earthy sign is associated with intellectual ability, and subjects of Virgo are distinguished by extraordinary discrimination and keenness of wit. They have a great technical sense and anything worth doing is worth doing perfectly, rarely will they half heartedly attempt anything and may become pedantic over things. They can be therefore be considered passionate, although can be very critical with a certain tendency towards scepticism.

Virgo Characteristics: Calm, level headed and practical they rarely allow a trace of sentiment or affection to interfere with or bias their judgement or conduct. Their cool reasoning ability can help to avert many mistakes that others would not have seen. Subjects of Virgo combine a petty and niggling disposition with a more genial and benevolent character always ready to lend a helping hand. Their tendency to be conscientious about many things can be overpowered with a prevailing earthy-neurotic element that can deliver a vicious twist. Their unemotional appearance and strongly logical demeanour may be a bit disconcerting to some. Their apparent unsentimental and somewhat reserved character can sometimes make those with a more sentimental nature feel it is not enough. Virgo can sometimes make people feel inferior; however they tend to be rather humble at the core. Preferring to be honest, subjects of Virgo usually speak openly about what is praying on their mind and tell it like it is unless in a deep resentful mode. They may become resentful when they consider they have not been shown proper respect. They love to be correct and dislike mistakes, which they consider must be fixed. Thoroughness, hard work and conscientiousness are hallmarks of Virgo, and as perfectionists if things go wrong, they are easily discouraged. Usually dignified and respectful, subjects of Virgo may sometimes seem a little aloof, although they can readily adapt themselves to suit the company in which they find themselves, and may even adopt aphorisms and accents in order to belong. However this tactfulness can amount to servility that may be part of a deliberate plan, carefully prepared with a definite end in view. They love to be active and do things with value and usually cannot stay passive for long. With a little of 'the child' in them, they maintain a mostly responsible and calculated demeanour. Virgo people are usually rather tidy and well-groomed; however in more pathological charts they may become too obsessed about cleanliness and order. The lower type can display the most extraordinary cunning, hypocrisy and cold blooded guile once their mind has become fixed upon a definite aim. Because of their ability to see every angle of a many-sided question, they are unhappy with abstract theorizing. Appreciating the many different points of view as they do, they find philosophical concepts difficult, and they vacillate and have no confidence in any conclusions at which they arrive. With these qualities, they are better as subordinates than leaders. Responsibility irks them and they often lack the breadth of strategic vision that a leader needs Virgoans are essentially tacticians, admirable in the attainment of limited objectives. They are precise, methodical and a great respect for law and order, they are usually observant, shrewd, patient and practical supporters of the status quo, and tend toward conservatism in all departments of life. They prefer harmony, with a restrained and austere taste they have a limited imagination which is far exceeded by their ability towards reasoning.

Professions and Occupations: Virgo's critical and analytical faculties serve them well within the field of law or politics. They are well suited as mechanics, carpenters or surveying and similar occupations but are better suited for a job in a library or office than a workshop. They adore the country, but Virgoans are unlikely to thrive as farmers on account of their sense of hygiene and cleanliness. Such is their mindset that they need the stimulus of solving practical problems rather than the mere routine or working to set specifications that need no thought. They are practical with their hands, good technicians and have genuine inventive talents; however their self distrust is often projected on to other people. They tend to make exacting employers, though in the demands they make on those under them they temper this attitude with justice. They have potential abilities in the arts, sciences and languages in particular of which they use correctly, clearly, consciously and formally, as grammarians and etymologists rather than for literary interests, although they are likely to have a good memory for apt quotations. They love to read and are able to recall with great clarity much of what they have read and seen. Mercury governs Leo and they are careful with money, their interest in statistics makes them excellent bookkeepers and accountants. They also make good editors, secretaries, critics, physicists and analytical chemists, doctors, nurses, psychologists, teachers, police officers and detectives and writers especially of reference works such as dictionaries and encyclopaedias. They may thrive as welfare workers, ministering to those less fortunate than themselves. Their flair for dress means they could do well within fashion where they can be trend setters. Virgoans readily assimilate new ideas into whichever profession they enter, always with caution and conserve that which they consider worth keeping from the past.

Psychology: As is usual with all, their faults are the extremes of their virtues, balanced criticism becomes fault-finding and nagging; and concern for detail becomes pedantic. They are modest and reserved, recoiling from publicity they conceal their own affairs in preference to criticise and analyse the actions of others and their motives. They lack enthusiasm, camaraderie and team spirit, are entirely individual and are often reluctant to follow anotherís plans or to assist in any way. When pursuing their own goals they seldom act upon the advice of others and carry on in their own steadfast, matter of fact way. Their tendency towards suppressing their natural kindness may result in its atrophy, the outcome could mean that they recoil from committing themselves to friendship, make few relationships, and keep superficial those that they do make. Their outward lack of feeling may, in some individuals conceal a vast pool of emotion, to which they are afraid of letting out because they simply cannot trust others, possibly as they have little confidence in themselves and their own judgments. Perhaps this is as they are aware of their own limitations such as worldliness, practicality, sophistication and affability. They hide their apprehensiveness about themselves and their often considerable sympathy with other people under an undemonstrative, quiet reserve. They can be sensible, discreet, wise and with a good understanding of other people's problems which they can tackle with a practicality not always evident in their own personal relationships. They are intellectually enquiring, methodical and logical, studious and teachable. They combine mental ingenuity with the ability to produce a clear analysis of the most complicated problems. They have an excellent eye for detail but they may be so meticulous that they neglect larger issues. Also, although they are realists, they may slow down projects by being too exact.

Relationships: Subjects of Virgo have considerable charm and dignity, consequently some male Virgoans may appear effeminate, they are of course not. Virgoans are very well suited to marriage and can be genuinely affectionate, making good spouses and parents; they are faithful, dutiful and proud of their family. However, they can be quite undemonstrative of this and need to control their tendency for criticism and fault finding as the happiness of their marriage may well depend upon it. Virgo love making is a perfection of technique rather than an expression of desire; they need to be wary not to choose a partner whose sex drive requires a passion they cannot match. Their most harmonious and well suited marriages are formed with those born between April 21st - May 21st and December the 21st - January 21st.

Possible Health Concerns. Virgo rules the abdomen, spleen, intestines, central nervous system and hands. They are prone to catarrh, cold, coughs, pleurisies, pneumonia and nervous instabilities, colic, constipation and indigestion. As a general rule Virgoans health is generally quite good although they are inclined to worry and this makes them vulnerable to stomach and bowel troubles, including colic and ulcers. Male Virgoans may have trouble with their sexual organs. Their delicate stomachs require careful consideration about their diet, it is essential that they treat their fascination with exotic food with extreme care. Their indecision in wider issues can become chronic; they above all have a spectacular ability to turn molehills of irritation into Himalayas of crisis. They are prone to worry causelessly over themselves and may resort to all manner of medics and use numerous quack remedies. They can become hypochondriacs, and are prone to a craving for drink or drugs if depressed.

Potential problems and suggested solutions: Subjects of Virgo who find themselves on the receiving end of negatives will find greater peace when they express the positive. Virgoans have unique traits to their personalities, when these traits are suppressed, or unrealized, problems will arise. By examining the problem we can assess the proper solution according to the Earth signs unique characteristics. Virgoans who find themselves on the receiving end of negatives will find greater peace when they express the positive. Virgoans need to try not to be overly argumentative, constant criticism is not an endearing quality to have, it is best if they allow others to live and let live, others will love them for it. Some Virgoans seem preoccupied with health matters and make it a continual topic of conversation. Tips and suggestions about health and health products should be shared if asked for. Virgoans sometimes restrict themselves by reducing their lives to a set of theories and pigeon-holes. Try to express the positive by first asking 'who or what are they serving, are they devoted or enslaved. Such questions start a new path that includes their true worth. Try expressing the positive traits of a finely tuned analytical reasoning, employing the light touch with employees and co-workers, while expressing genuine concern for all. It works wonders at reducing mountains to hillocks.
